Group H blog entry for Monday 7 May

Day 5 of excavation

After a much appreciated weekend of rest and recharging we were back on site Monday morning to continue our work. Both mood and energy seemed to be on top for the whole crew and we were excited to get back to our trenches. In the trench running down the slope of the barrow we finally, after much anticipation and troweling, uncovered the first stone of what seems to be the stone ring. Hopefully more of the ring will reveal itself in the upcoming days, along with the pebbly mound that it surrounds. However, one of the most exciting parts of doing excavation like this is that we never quite know what we are going to find or how our work will turn out in the end. It is also a great way for us students to get some hands-on experience, and we are constantly learning as we go along. Finally we can start to understand all the hard work that goes into uncovering the past and our own history. It also doesn’t hurt that we get to have a lot of fun (and cake) while we’re doing it.
